Discover Malaysia with Homestay Travels

The Ministry of Tourism Malaysia’s Homestay Programme is becoming increasingly popular among local and foreign tourists.

Homestay travels allow tourists the unique opportunity to live with a Malaysian family in a rural setting, to experience the beautiful simplicity of life in the “kampong” and learn about the lifestyles and cultures of the people. Homestay offers tourists a chance to discover Malaysia’s incredible natural and cultural treasures, emphasizing the responsible utilization of available environmental resources and highlighting the authentic traditions of Malaysia’s cultures and arts.

For approximately RM8- a day, a guest will be hosted by a family and participate in the daily routines of a “kampung” life. Visitors typically stay in traditional wooden houses on stilts set amidst the abundant beauty of nature. Each Homestay has something unique to offer and organises its own special activities for the guests such as jungle trekking, traditional fishing, rubber tapping, fruit picking and planting, and handicraft-making.

Homestay was launched in 1995 in Temerloh, Pahang. Since then, it has spread to various other states in the country including Sabah and Sarawak.

As of 2010, there are 153 official Homestay Operators. All of the official Homestay Operators are registered and have been trained and licensed by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia. For the official Homestay Operators directory, visit www.go2homestay.com.

The Homestay Programme is carried out in collaboration with The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, respective State Governments and The Malaysian Homestay Association.
